Sorry, but my wiki database was corrupted in the process of upgrading to a newer wiki software version, while migrating to a new hosting service. I am attempting to manually restore my wiki pages from backups, page by page, and hope to have this done by the end of May 2016. Sorry for the outage.

Revision as of 06:59, 24 October 2018

Welcome to Prof. Kent Lee's English Wiki page, offering resources in the following areas:

  • Teachers: Resources for teaching foreign languages, grammar, pedagogy, linguistics, and psychology
  • Students and learners of English: Resources for learners of English as a second/foreign language, particularly intermediate and advanced learners.

This page has just moved to www.enwiki.org. The older domain www.kentlee7.com is now used for other research, pedagogical, and academic contents.

This wiki exists to offer resources for English teachers and learners. Teachers are welcome to use these materials (but with attribution, please). This site began in October 2015, replacing my older site, and more pages will be added over time. See below and on the sidebar for some quick links.

2 Purpose

This is a site offering resources for language learning and teaching methods that promote [1] L2 competence and communication, [2] inductive learning methods, social learning strategies, and learner autonomy to promote language learning, and [3] more intuitive understanding of language forms through discovery methods and through more intuitive explanations of language forms that are possible from the world of cognitive grammar.

3 Teachers and developers

Many English teachers have a bachelor's or master's degree in TESOL or a related area, but will find themselves sometimes inadequately prepared in the field. This may include brief or inadequate preparation in communicative language teaching (CLT) and its practical implementation, meaningful and intuitive understanding of grammar and grammar pedagogy, the psychology of learning and teaching, and practical linguistic foundations. This side, and the accompanying Youtube channel (to launch later in 2016) is intended to help teachers in these areas.

Educators and materials developers are welcome to submit contents for this wiki. Feel free to email me contents, materials, or ideas at the email address below, and if they are suitable, I will add them. (I am not planning to grant editing rights to others, at least for now, due to manageability issues.)

4 Cognitive Grammar

Cognitive grammar is a paradigm for understanding grammar as part of human cognitive psychology, rooted in schema theory and other psychological principles. This leads to a more intuitive understanding of grammar for teachers and students.

5 Cognitive Communicative Language Teaching

In spite of its obvious strengths, some have criticized communicative language teaching (CLT). Some have said that it does not apply well in an East Asian context, and that it does not apply well to some courses such as content based instruction or writing instruction. To some degree, these criticisms may be unfair; for example, East Asian students can learn to embrace inductive style learning. But a few shortcomings do exist in CLT, which I propose to remedy with a somewhat expanded paradigm.

Cognitive communicative language teaching (CCLT) is how I describe a synthesis of techniques into a more integrated approach that is situated within the framework of cognitive, social, and learning psychology, which subsumes principles of the psychology of learning and cognitive approaches to grammar and linguistics. This framework thus includes cognitive grammar and communicative language teaching (CLT). The communicative component is situated within a social psychology or socio-cognitive framework. This will allow teachers to contextualize language teaching to their students’ particular needs, levels, and socio-cultural context.

6 Learners

This site also will provide learners some relatively intuitive and simplified explanations of grammar and other areas of English that they have not learned or have not been taught very clearly in the past. This includes grammar, pronunciation, and academic writing. This site, at least for now, is aimed primarily at intermediate and advanced learners.
